People Notice: Acts 4:13-21
Acts 3 and 4 tell the story of two ordinary guys who did something extraordinary. Peter and John healed a man who had never walked, then stood up to the most powerful religious leaders of their day without flinching. They had no formal training. No credentials. Just time spent with Jesus. And people could tell.
When you’ve been with Jesus, people notice.
It’s a simple statement, but it gets to the heart of what real discipleship looks like. Following Jesus is not just about what we know—it is about who we are becoming.
A Faith You Can See
You can usually tell what someone has been around. Time leaves evidence.
In Acts 3, Peter and John were on their way to the temple when they encountered a man who had never been able to walk. In the name of Jesus Christ, they told him to stand—and he did. Instantly, he was walking, jumping, and praising God.
The miracle drew a crowd, and Peter made the message unmistakably clear: this wasn’t about human ability. It was about Jesus. Healing came through His name. Salvation is found in Him alone.
That bold proclamation stirred opposition. Religious leaders questioned Peter and John and commanded them to stop speaking about Jesus.
But instead of backing down, they stood firm.
Acts 4:13 captures the moment: the leaders were astonished. Peter and John were not formally trained or highly educated. They were ordinary men. Yet their courage and clarity made one thing undeniable—they had been with Jesus.
And it showed.
What People Notice
So, what does it actually look like when someone has been with Jesus?
Acts 4 gives us two clear markers.
1. People Who Are With Jesus Act Differently
The first thing people noticed was courage.
Peter had not always been this way. Before Jesus’ resurrection, he was so afraid that he denied even knowing Jesus three times. But after encountering the risen Christ and being filled with the Holy Spirit, Peter was transformed.
When the authorities ordered him to stop speaking about Jesus, he refused—not out of rebellion or disrespect, but out of obedience to God.
That is what courage looks like. It is not the absence of fear. It is choosing to do what is right, even when it is difficult.
Jesus changes how we live.
Like a flashlight that finally turns on, a life transformed by Jesus begins to shine. The difference becomes visible.
For us today, that kind of courage can look like:
Standing up for someone who is being mistreated
Telling the truth when it would be easier to lie
Praying in public, even when it feels uncomfortable
Choosing kindness in a culture that often rewards harshness
Inviting someone into a relationship with Jesus
These are not dramatic acts—but they are powerful. They are evidence of a life shaped by Christ.
2. People Who Are With Jesus Speak Differently
The second thing people noticed was how Peter and John spoke.
In Acts 4:19–20, Peter responds to the authorities: “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges. As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”
They could not stay silent because Jesus had changed them.
What fills your heart eventually comes out of your mouth.
If anger fills us, anger comes out. If kindness fills us, kindness comes out. And when Jesus fills our hearts, He begins to show up in our words.
That does not mean everyone becomes a preacher. It means Jesus becomes part of our everyday conversations.
It can sound like:
“I’ll pray for you.”
“God really helped me through that.”
“I learned something from the Bible this week…”
“Would you want to come to church with me?”
These simple, natural expressions of faith reflect a heart that has been shaped by time with Jesus.
Being With Jesus Changes Everything
Here is the key takeaway: Peter and John did not live and speak this way because they simply knew about Jesus. They lived this way because they had been with Him.
That distinction matters.
The goal of the Christian life is not just information—it is transformation. God is not only calling us to learn about Jesus, but to walk with Him daily.
We spend time with Jesus when we:
Pray
Read Scripture
Worship
Obey what He teaches
And as we do, something begins to change.
Our actions shift. Our words follow. And over time, the people around us start to notice.
Not because we are trying to stand out—but because Jesus is shining through us.
When you’ve been with Jesus, people notice.
